While sitting in class and listening to Dr. Redick's stories of personal religious experiences, I had a thought: isn't this just how oral cultures learn? Previously, I'd been working under the flawed assumption that it must be categorically different in oral cultures, and that their learning experiences, especially as they relate to religion, would be alien to me.
I don't think I was correct in that. There's something familiar and engaging about listening to a trusted authority's stories as a form of learning. It feels much more intimate than simply reading a book, and makes me feel more directly engaged with the subject matter. A very interesting revelation to have consciously, though one that I'm sure was a bit late.
