Isabella Mann: Oral vs Literacy
I thought the contrast between orality and literacy highlights two distinct types of human communication. Orality binds communities through shared, living narratives, while literacy expands knowledge beyond the moment, and preserving it for future generations.
Oral Traditions rely on rhythm, repetition, and communal participation, ensuring that knowledge is not just transmitted but embodies. In this sense, orality represents the power of spoken word to unite people in a shared meaning.
Literacy, in contrast, enables preservation and intellectual growth, which allows ideas to be recorded, analyzed, and interpreted across generations. Writing externalizes memory, making it possible to store knowledge and build upon it in ways oral cannot.
Understanding this balance helps us appreciate how cultures evolve and how communication shapes thought.
